Philips Videopac C52

European Release 1983
, I don't believe this was ever released In the UK, but slight modification to the French system allows it to work in the UK. there was a design to release the guts of the machine in the
states under the Magnavox label as the Odyssey 3, which had he same basic hardware but with a cosmetically different exterior, although the prototypes were shown it is not believed this machine went on general release, however some people have one or two of the less than a dozen are rumoured to exist.
Further down you will find instructions for the modification and the steps needed to be taken to repair the very fallible power Switch

Philips Videopac C52
  1. The Videopac G7000 was an 8-bit console manufactured by Philips which was launched in December 1978. It featured a full alphanumerical keyboard, 1K ROM with each cassette having 2K of plug-in ROM. It was known as the Magnavox Odyssey ² in the USA as Philips had acquired Magnavox in 1974. It was released as the Philips C52 in France.
  2. In Europe (and in other parts of the world as well) the Odyssey 2 was sold as the Philips G7000 Videopac console. In France, it was known as the Philips C52. In Brazil it was known as the Odyssey, as the original Odyssey was never released in Brazil. Total overseas sales reached over one million units.

The Magnavox Odyssey2 known in Europe as the Philips Videopac G7000 (and a bunch of other names a bunch of other places) is a home video game console released in 1978. One of the earliest gaming consoles, it is one of the least known today.

The 7400 was the next generation console for Philips which was intended to see them trough till around 1985/6 with plans for another fifty plus Videopac cartridges, however the fable computer crash of 1984 meant development cutbacks and so this promising console never took a great hold on the market. and the fifty cartridges quickly became two.

The first Videopac game to take advantage of the enhanced capabilities of the 7400 was Terrahawks, Videopac 51, thus making the further cartridges from that point on Videopac Plus enhanced, they also released new versions of some of the older previously available cartridges such as Race, Stonesling, Satellite Attack, Freedom fighters, & Pickaxe Pete.

The majority of cases, for purely commercial reasons, most were made backwards compatible with the old G7000 and as such in the limited space available on the carts they could do little more with the enhancements than add colourful backgrounds. With three exceptions and theses three exceptions consistently will reach the highest values when sold due to their scarceness, that would be Helicopter Rescue, Norseman and Trans American Rally, Helicopter rescue Videopac 59 is not to be confused with the Magnavox re-release of the same name (which is very common and not very valuable.) 59 & 60 both written specifically for the 7400 and were compatible with the JOPAC model, these games left the two dimensional world of the G7000 far behind and were amongst the first High resolution three dimensional playing fields available for a home console. There is a forth Exception to the list, however I don't class it as a videopac cartridge as its the Microsoft Basic Expansion Module, Which is Only compatible with the G7400 and possibly the JO-7400, though I have yet to confirm this is the case.

Since then a flashpoint ROM was discovered, Flashpoint was to be the release game for the American version of the G7400 called the Odyssey3. This has been released by enthusiast Dieter Konig of Classic Consoles Centre as Videopac 63, for which he also supplies a wooden joystick holder as flashpoint was intended for the O3 which had built in controller securing it was intended to be played by one player with tow controllers simultaneously

Comparison Between G7000 and G7400

Are you ready kids? MAME 0.224 (our August release) is out now! As always, there’s plenty to talk about. First of all, the Magnavox Odyssey² and Philips Videopac+ G7400 have had a major overhaul, with many graphical errors fixed, most software working, and support for the Chess and Home Computer modules. The Gigatron 8-bit homebrew computer, created by the late Marcel van Kervinck and based entirely on 7400-series logic chips, is now working with graphics and controller support. Acorn 8-bit expansions continue to arrive, with several additions for the BBC Micro and Electron. Speaking of expansions, regular contributor F.Ulivi has delivered serial modules for the HP Integral PC and HP9825/HP9845 families.

Analog arcade audio continues to advance. If you’ve played Namco’s Tank Battalion, ancestor of the NES classic Battle City, you’ll be acutely aware of the limitations of the sample-based audio. That has been addressed this month, with netlist-based audio emulation. For Midway, 280 ZZZAP sound has been further refined, and netlist-based audio has been implemented for Laguna Racer and Super Speed race, which use similar circuitry. Sega G-80 games have received some long-overdue attention, with netlist-based audio added for Astro Blaster, Eliminator, Space Fury and Zektor, as well as better Universal Sound Board emulation for Star Trek and Tac/Scan, and more accurate CPU timing. Other games receiving netlist-based audio are Destroyer and Flyball from Atari, and Fire One and Star Fire from Exidy. On the topic of audio emulation, the ultra low cost GameKing now has preliminary sound emulation, making the games feel more complete.

Work on UK gambling systems has continued, with several more Barcrest, BWB and JPM games working in this release. There are also a number of new European gambling games, including several Cherry Master and Jolly Joker sets. A significant number of arcade driving games have had additional internal layouts optimised for use on wide aspect ratio displays added. Other advances in home computer emulation include Apple IIe RGB monitor mode support, Apple II CMS SCSII II card support, and proper emulation speed for the VTech Laser 500.

As always, there’s far more happening than we have space for here, and you can read all about it in the whatsnew.txt file, or get the source and 64-bit Windows binary packages from the download page.
